Please Pass the Motrin

Mention the words "Infant Motrin" and that artificial fruity/berry smell pops right into my mind. Wave a syringe full of the magical goodness where Miles can see it and his eyes light up like it's Christmas morning.

We've gone through lots of this wonderful drug lately, what with Miles teething and getting over a little cold. But I'm a believer...this stuff works! I actually asked a pharmacist today if there was any harm in giving it to Miles on an almost daily basis, due to the lovely world of teething we're both having to endure. He said there wasn't, which makes this stuff even more magnificent. Thank you, Motrin. For making my days (and nights) SO much better since I discovered you. Miles thanks you, too. :)

Seriously, what would to world do without motrin? I have found that the knock off store brand works just as efficiently, and it is 6 bucks cheaper... it makes the habit a little more affordable. And yes, we both sound like addicts

Danger Will Robinson, Danger!

I don't know what manufacturer you purchased your Motrin from, but if your bottle is the same as the bottle in the picture, there has been a major recall on that Motrin (and tons of other baby medicines too.)

Go to this website to find out if your Motrin (and other baby meds are a part of the recall or not):

http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com/

Note, the recall is based only a theoretical danger and no babies have gotten sick from it, but, still it's better to be safe than sorry.

Also, my 2 cents on medications and babies:

Use what you need to use to get by (within the limits listed on the packaging) but I wouldn't go overboard.

No medicine is without side affects, and long term use of even over the counter medicines can screw you up. Lots of Motrin over a long time can lead to Kidney problems, stomach ulcers, and even cardiovascular stuff too. (I would worry most about the Kidneys in a baby though.)

In regards to Motrin "use the lowest effective dose for the shortest period of time" (Direct quote on Motrin dosing from an official pediatric website) and don't exceed 10 days of use without direct approval from your healthcare provider.

Sorry to rant, but I just thought you would like to know.

Thanks, Boy!

I did in fact check out the recall situation a while ago...Thankfully, the bottle we have wasn't recalled. And yes, I know, my post made me sound like I've turned my baby into a druggie. Being a nurse, I'm super paranoid of drug side-effects. And working in Endoscopy, I've seen many stomach ulcers from the dreaded use of too much Motrin and other NSAIDs..

One main reason you shouldn't exceed the use of Motrin over ten days is because Motrin won't get rid of a sickness- It's job is mostly just to mask symptoms. It makes you FEEL better (even though you're not). If your baby is sick, and all you've been using to "treat" the problem is Motrin, then you need to get to the doc for further evaluation. A sickness longer than ten days needs attention, and you can't just mask the problem with drugs... However, Miles hasn't been sick (aside from a small cold). The majority of his problem is the darn teething.

So don't worry! I'm being careful... :) We only give him a small dose at night and that's been helping him sleep. ;)

Hope you're doing well!!

Very cool. Glad to hear you already know about the recall. Yeah, I think I read to much into your post. A small dose just at night is way different than what I was thinking. I was imagining maxing out the recommended dose for 24/7 over a long period of time... Definitely not the same. I hope you guys are doing well! We'll be back in Utah come December, hopefully we'll be able to see everyone then.
